Bewegung des Herzens (by Ingeborg Bachmann) | Translated by Christina O’Connor

Bewegung des Herzens

Auswahl

Nach grauen Tagen

Eine einzige Stunde frei sein!
Frei, fern!
Wie Nachtlieder in den Sphaeren.
Und hoch fliegen ueber den Tagen
moechte ich
und das Vergessen suchen – – –
ueber das dunkle Wasser gehen
nach weissen Rosen,
meiner Seele Fluegel geben
und, oh Gott, nichts wissen mehr
von der Bitterkeit langer Naechte,
in denen die Augen gross werden
vor namenloser Not.
Traenen liegen auf meinen Wangen
aus den Naechten des Irrsinns,
des Wahnes schoener Hoffnung,
dem Wunsch, Ketten zu brechen
und Licht zu trinken – – –
Einen einzige Stunde Licht schauen!
Eine einzige Stunde frei sein!

Movement of the Heart

selection

After Gray Days

To be free for a single hour!
Free, far away!
Like nightsongs in the spheres.
And I would like to fly high above
the days
and search for forgetting – – –
go over the dark water
seeking white roses,
to give my soul wings
and, oh God, to know nothing more
of the bitterness of long nights,
in which the eyes grow big with
a nameless misery.
Tears lie upon my cheeks
from the nights of insanity
of beautiful hope deluded,
from the wish to break the chains
and drink the light – – –
to see a single hour of light!
To be free for a single hour!
